My formative years were in India and in profound ways that experience shapes and guides my thinking today. I trained as an organisational psychologist and I have taken these skills in leadership development and culture change and honed them over the last 13 years in big consulting engagements and for global financial institutions. My focus is simple: what lies behind the behaviours I can see and sense? This has involved me in some of the highest profile cases of the banking crisis; from investigating rogue trading to assessing the cultural backdrop behind failing performance. I have extensive experience in strategic change, organisation development and learning. I am pursuing a doctorate in organisations and consulting. I also teach change and organisation development on a guest lecturer basis at the London School of Economics.
My first job out of University was working thousands of miles from home, in bandit country… on a tiny island in the Philippines. Whilst my subsequent 18 years in consulting have not always been so tropical – it has been characterised by working collaboratively with clients, under challenging conditions, to achieve exceptional results. My career has been spent with the world’s biggest consulting firms and businesses – my last role being a Director with a big 4 professional service firm where I co-led the organisation change consultancy team across Financial Services in the UK. During that time I have directed some exceptional programmes to the benefit of thousands of employees. I have extensive experience of culture change, organisation design and programme & change management.
Tussen de regels door lezen – reading between the lines! A good Dutch proverb that I learned growing up in the Netherlands, and a principle that still drives me to understand why people behave the way they do. I started my career as a programme manager at one of the largest Dutch banks. I have since broadened my business education with an MBA. As a consultant at Blacklight Advisory, I have been working with one of UK’s largest regulators to help them understand the underlying reasons why they behave as they do!
As a member of the British Psychological Society, with a BSc and MSc in Organisational and Social Psychology I have a strong interest in understanding why organisations act the way they do, and more importantly, how this behaviour can be changed. As a consultant at Blacklight, I have been involved in the writing of the FCAs Approach to Consumers, conducting cultural diagnosis and behavioural change programmes with a multinational wealth management firm and managing graduate development programmes at one of the UK’s largest specialist banks – to name a few.
DR. CARYN SOLOMON
I am originally from South Africa and split my time between Johannesburg and London. I have a deep interest in and commitment to developing leadership in organisations. I have built my expertise in organisations, leadership and people over many years of consulting, both internal and external. I was the Global Head of Organisation Development at Investec Bank for many years. I teach on Desmond Tutu’s African Leadership programme which aims to build the next generation of leaders across Africa. I support Blacklight as a senior advisor working on leadership and strategic engagements. I run a Masters programme at the London School of Economics on the theory and practice of Organisation Development.
I have held global roles in Organisation Development, Leadership Development, and Talent with a FTSE top 50 company. For the past 20+ years I have explored the nature of human flourishing and the performance of individuals, teams and organisations. I have a continued fascination with the world of work in the 21st century, the nature of organisations and their impact on individuals. I have led a range of transformational change programmes and now majors on coaching senior leaders and emerging talent. I hold an MSc in HR, am a fellow of the CIPD, a certified Integral Coach (ICF accredited), accredited in leading coaching circles, a qualified user of psychometric assessments, trained in trauma release exercises and hold a certificate in mindfulness.
I work as an Executive Coach with senior leaders. I have had over 15 years of experience working in industry in a senior management capacity in different sectors. I have led large, multi-jurisdictional teams and understand the leadership challenges associated with those roles. Over this time, I have gained tremendous knowledge of work related issues from stress, performance anxiety to leadership issues and team development. I hold an MSc in Psychotherapy and I am a Certified Transactional Analyst, accredited by the UKCP and a member of the BACP.
I graduated from the Faculty of Law in 2010 and I am currently taking a Legal Practice Course in Poland. In the time between graduating and now, I spent several years in London working for a leading specialist bank in their Organisation Development department. I am currently based in Poland studying to become a barrister, whilst providing Blacklight with remote administrative support. It is a great opportunity as I have the chance to work with such an amazing team! Dividing life between two countries can be challenging sometimes, however, I have always said that good organisation is a key to success.
